Before purchasing or keeping livestock on the site, all new plot-holders must apply or speak to a committee member.
Step 1: Research and Preparation
Before diving into the chicken-keeping world, arm yourself with knowledge. Research different chicken breeds suitable for your plot.
Prepare a suitable coop that provides ample space, protection from predators, and good ventilation. Remember, happy chickens lay delicious eggs!
Step 2: Acquiring Chickens
Once you've researched and set up your coop and recieved permission, it's time to get your first flock of chickens. Remember to start small to gain experience and expand your flock later. Transport your chickens carefully and introduce them to their new home gradually.
Step 3: Feeding and Care
Proper nutrition is key to healthy chickens. Provide a balanced diet of chicken feed, supplemented with occasional treats like corn. Ensure they have access to food and fresh water at all times. Regularly clean the coop, check for any signs of illness and prevent issues with red mite.
Step 4: Egg-Cellent Egg Management
If you're in it for the eggs, collecting them daily is a must. Make sure your nesting boxes are cozy, clean and inviting. Store eggs in a cool place with consistent temperature and humidity. Fresh eggs are a delightful reward for your efforts!
Step 5: Predator Protection
Predators come in various forms, from foxes to neighborhood cats. Secure your coop with sturdy fencing, and consider installing motion-activated lights. Regularly check for potential weak spots in your defenses to keep your feathered friends safe!
Step 6: Health Monitoring
Just like any other pets, chickens require regular health check-ups. Familiarise yourself with common chicken illnesses and symptoms.
If you wish to keep live stock, speak to a member of the committee.
